Adults 21 or older can take classes to learn the skills needed to eventually earn their high school equivalency (GED/HSE).
Classes are tuition-free and are taught in all 5 boroughs. There are many types of classes. Adult Basic Education (ABE) helps you build your reading and math skills to prepare for High School Equivalency (HSE) prep classes.
There are also Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes, and English as a Second Language (ESOL) classes to help you learn English.
You are eligible for NYCDOE adult education if you are:
- a New York City resident
- 21 years or older
- do not have a U.S. High School diploma or equivalency (HSE)
